The power requirements of modern space electronics continue to rise. Latest generations of FPGAs and microprocessors combine high computational performance with demanding power profiles, requiring regulated supply voltages delivered close to the load. This is the role of Point-Of-Load (POL) converters: converting power locally.
The 3D PLUS’ latest radiation-tolerant Point-Of-Load, 3DPM0602, expands the existing 3D PLUS Point-Of-Load range to provide higher currents for the latest generations of FPGAs and microprocessors.
The 3DPM0602 is a highly integrated synchronous buck Point-Of-Load power module designed for demanding space applications.
It supports a wide input voltage range from 4.6 V to 13.2 V and provides an adjustable output voltage from 0.8 V to 3.3 V, delivering up to 20 A output current, with 20 W maximum output power. This flexibility allows the same POL converter to supply different load voltages within a power architecture.
The power module integrates input and output filtering in a compact 30 × 30 × 8 mm package, simplifying its integration on electronic boards where space is limited.
Reliable power delivery depends on protection and regulation working together. The 3DPM0602 provides full protection against output short-circuit conditions. It also includes input under-voltage protection (UVP), which prevents operation outside the valid input voltage range, and thermal shutdown circuitry, which disables operation when the internal temperature of the power module exceeds its specified thermal limit.
On the performance side, the converter is engineered for high dynamic performance and ensures precise output-voltage regulation, even under rapid load variations. For digital loads such as FPGAs and microprocessors, whose current demand can change quickly between operating modes, stable output voltage regulation is essential to keep supply levels within valid ranges.
Input and output filtering further supports clean power delivery to the load and reduces interaction with the surrounding power distribution network.
In space electronics, power management is a critical design area. FPGAs and microprocessors increasingly concentrate processing functions on board spacecraft, and their performance directly depends on the quality of their local power supply. POL converters address this by converting power close to the load, minimizing distribution losses and providing the stable, regulated voltages that digital devices require.
Space also imposes demanding operating conditions on electronics. Components must tolerate the radiation environment while maintaining dependable operation over the mission duration — which is why radiation-tolerant power solutions are a specific requirement of space power architectures.
With its 20-A output current capability, the 3DPM0602 extends the 3D PLUS POL range toward higher-power loads, matching the supply needs of the latest generations of FPGAs and microprocessors.
The 3DPM0602 delivers its capabilities in a 30 × 30 × 8 mm package. In space electronic systems, where board area is a constrained resource and power density continues to increase, a compact POL power module simplifies board layout around high-current loads.
Its high level of integration, combining the synchronous buck conversion stage, protection features and filtering in a single module, reduces design effort and supports consistent, repeatable implementation across power designs.
Reliable power delivery is a decisive factor in systems that must operate in demanding space conditions. With its wide input voltage range, adjustable output voltage, up to 20 A output current and complete protection features in a 30 × 30 × 8 mm package, the 3DPM0602 addresses the power requirements of the latest generations of FPGAs and microprocessors. It illustrates 3D PLUS’s expertise in developing power solutions for space electronics.
